WHAT is IKMAL?
The Association of Malaysia's Maritime Professionals
or the IKHTISAS KELAUTAN MALAYSIA (IKMAL) is a
professional body for mariners and maritime professionals
in Malaysia who are serving on board vessels as well as
working ashore.
It was registered with the Registrar of Societies (RoS) in
February 1985 under the initial name of "Institut Kelautan
Malaysia", later amended to "Ikhtisas Kelautan Malaysia" in
November 2014.
What are the PRIMARY OBJECTIVES of IKMAL?
IKMAL was initially established with the primary aim
of enhancing the maritime professionalism of its
members through the conduct of seminars,
workshops, conferences and maritime courses.
It also encompasses the resolution of professional
disputes that may arise between its members and
other entities. It also publishes an annual magazine
on relevant maritime topics. It acts as the
professional maritime adviser on issues pertaining
to the maritime and shipping sector.

In 2014 in incorporated the promotion and protection
of its members’ welfare as the other primary
objective. This is done by providing Seafarers’
Education Fund (SEF) annual grants to deserving
and eligible members; Cash assistance to members/
close family of members who may be facing serious
illness and Group Personal Accident Insurance
coverage.

During the month of Ramadan, IKMAL organises the
“Kuih Raya/Festival Cookies for Seafarers” initiative
whereby boxes containing “Kuih Raya/Festival
Cookies” are distributed to vessels in Malaysian
ports and maritime staff working on Hari Raya Aidil
